Senators Stabenow and Levin announced this past week that the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (a.ka. “the stimulus bill”) contains $2.7 million for brownfield cleanup Downriver.
A brownfield, according to the EPA, is “real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.” Cleaning up brownfields so they can be redeveloped is an important step in creating new jobs Downriver.
Most of the new money will be used for assessing area brownfields for future cleanup. More information in the News-Herald.
